1965 Promenade

First Published: Promenade and Other Plays.

Synopsis
Prisoners 105 and 106 sing as they dig their way out of prison. The Jailer, boasting of sexually abusing women visitors, fails to notice their escape. 105 and 106 reappear at a banquet where they change into top hats and tails and join the flirtatious, playful high society Ladies and Gentleman. Each time a song is suggested 105 and 106 prepare to sing but it is made clear that they are, like the Servant, outsiders.

A giant cake is delivered and from it steps a minimally dressed Miss Cake. The ladies sing happily of becoming naked and take off their dresses. The Jailer enters telling everyone that they are under arrest until he has found two escaped prisoners. His attempts to approach the women are rebuffed whilst 105 and 106 miss a chance to embrace Miss O who then sings of missed opportunities for love. Mr R and Mr S take turns feeding grapes to Miss Cake but like the other ladies and gentlemen become drowsy and fall asleep. As the guests sleep 105 and 106 begin to steal from them. The Jailer watches them but is ejected by the Servant who then assists the continuing thefts.

Now outside, the Servant tells 105 and 106 that she now understands what life is about but 105 and 106 remain puzzled. A Mother appears searching for her lost babies. 105, 106 and the Servant find and rob a hit and run victim. The car driver returns to confess and the Jailer appears as 105 and 106 put their prison jackets onto the accident victim who is promptly arrested. A further exchange of clothing confuses the Jailer who arrests and removes the Driver and Injured man mistaking them for 105 and 106. The Ladies and Gentlemen trace the Servant, 105 and 106 to a park and continue their flirtations and quarrelling. They are observed by the Mother, 105 and 106 who conclude that the rich are stupid.

Followed by the Jailer the trio join two unenthusiastic soldiers on a battlefield. The Mayor arrives to review the troops accompanied by Miss Cake. With the Jailer the Ladies and Gentlemen make use of the soldiers' bandages as maypole streamers to dance around the soldiers. The Mayor invites everyone to his home where he bombastically commands theatrical performances from them and boorishly criticises their efforts. He dispatches 105 and 106 to the Jailer despite pleas from the Mother. In the ensuing uproar all are taken to jail but the Ladies and Gentlemen soon escape. The Servant also leaves but alone leaving imprisoned 105 and 106 with Mother who asks them if they have now found evil. They say not and close their eyes as she sings a lullaby about living with her own truth. When she too has left 105 and 106 sing of cake and bread.
